Looking for a Profound alternative?
Start by asking what it can't see.
Profound is good prompt-monitoring software. Every tool in that category, Profound included, observes from the outside: it asks engines questions and reads the answers. Not one of them can see the request an assistant makes to your server while composing a reply — because that request exists only in your own log.
What each one actually does.
| Capability | Profound | This work |
|---|---|---|
| Runs your prompt list against the engines | Yes, daily, with full answer snapshots | No — I buy this from a tool like everyone else |
| Tells you which sources the model pulled | Yes | No |
| Panel data on what people actually ask AI | Yes (Prompt Volumes) | No |
| Records requests AI agents make to your server | No — not visible from outside | Yes, per URL, split by purpose |
| Separates a background crawl from a live answer fetch | No | Yes |
| Covers engines its plan does not include | No | Any agent that hits your server |
| Ties a citation to a booked job and invoice | No | Yes, that is the attribution build |
| Costs a subscription forever | Yes | No — the log stays yours |
Read the top four rows honestly: Profound does things I do not do at all. Daily prompt runs across a large set, source attribution inside answers, and panel data on what people really ask assistants — that last one is genuinely theirs and I cannot reproduce it. If those are what you need, buy the tool. The bottom four rows are the ones no subscription in this category covers.
When Profound is the right purchase.
- You need competitive share-of-voice across a large prompt set, reported weekly, for a marketing team that will act on it.
- You want panel data on what real people ask assistants — that is genuinely theirs and I cannot reproduce it.
- You have an enterprise procurement process and want a vendor with SSO, an API and a support contract.
- Your buyers convert in a browser, so a click-based view of the channel is mostly sufficient.
When a log and an attribution chain beat another dashboard.
- Your conversion is a phone call, so the answer arrives in the chat and no dashboard can see the outcome.
- You suspect AI is reading your site and want proof from your own server rather than an external sample.
- You want to know which specific URL an assistant reached for yesterday, and see it move within days of rewriting that page.
- You need the number that pays — booked jobs carrying an origin — which no prompt sampler can produce.
- You are one site, not a portfolio, and a per-seat annual contract is the wrong shape.
The two are not exclusive and I run both for clients: a cheap subscription that covers your engines, plus the instrument it cannot have. How to read any tool in this category →
What I cannot do, said out loud
- I am not a SaaS product. There is no login page, no self-serve trial and no dashboard you can buy by the seat.
- A fetch is not a citation. My log proves an assistant pulled the page; whether it was quoted is a question only prompt sampling answers — which is exactly why I keep paying for a tool in this category.
- I classify by user-agent string, and a user-agent is a claim. Requests for config-file backups have arrived carrying assistant user agents, so the honest word for these counts is “claimed”.
- Static files are invisible to a PHP-level logger. Zero recorded requests for a static file means nothing at all.
Questions people ask before switching.
As published at the time of writing: Starter $99/month and Growth $399/month, both billed annually, with Enterprise on custom terms and no published minimum. Wider engine coverage, API access, SSO and ChatGPT Shopping tracking sit in the Enterprise tier, and Starter and Growth can be limited to a single region and language. Verify current numbers before you buy — this market reprices constantly.
No, and I would rather say that plainly than sell you a comparison that is really an advert. Profound is prompt-monitoring software. I am an operator who installs the instrument it structurally cannot have — a server-side log of what AI agents fetch from your site — and builds the attribution that turns any of this into revenue. For a genuine like-for-like alternative to Profound, look at Peec, Otterly or Ahrefs Brand Radar.
Because the two measure different things and one of them is a census. Prompt monitoring asks engines questions from outside and records whether you appeared in a sample. The server log records every request an assistant made to your pages while answering a real person. On one client site in eight days that was 425 live fetches — against 23 sessions that Google Analytics recorded from all AI platforms in a full month. No external tool can produce either half of that comparison.
The outcome. In home services the customer gets the answer and the phone number inside the chat and never visits the site, so a click-based view understates the channel by roughly seventy times. The tool can tell you your share of voice went up. It cannot tell you a phone rang, and the owner is asking about the phone.
Published on the pricing page: the audit that measures all four layers from $1,500, tracker install plus first report from $900, monthly engagements from $2,500. No discovery-call gate and no annual lock-in. If a cheap subscription is genuinely the right answer for you, I will say so — that conversation is free.
